Plans for the actor who like action sequences to star in such a film originally surfaced in 2020, with NASA and Elon Musk's SpaceX both working on the idea.

Tom Cruise is anticipated to perform a spacewalk for his future film, making history as he will be launched into space for an upcoming Universal blockbuster, according to Universal studios chairperson Dame Donna Langley.

The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman, who will now head the film, has said that after directing Locked Down in a lonely London during the epidemic, he feels "more confident" about helming a film in space.
